We are pleased to announce our TOAST Circle Pop-Up, demonstrating ideas of circularity through the use of material and process, will now take place 17 - 27 May.
Discover a capsule collection created in partnership with fashion designer Phoebe English and participate in a programme of creative textile and repair workshops.
The pop-up will take place alongside Purple Hibiscus, the new artwork by Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. In this piece, Mahama explores his interest in the life cycle of textiles and what can be learnt from the memories embedded within them.
TOAST & Phoebe English
A seven-piece repurposed collection created using returned or damaged TOAST garments and fabric offcuts. Each piece is creatively reimagined using patchworking, weaving, deconstruction and Phoebe’s signature pattern-cutting techniques.
Purple Hibiscus by Ibrahim Mahama
Approximately 2,000 square metres of bespoke woven cloth envelope the Barbican’s brutalist concrete walls. 100 ‘batakaris’ – robes worn by Ghanaian kings – are embroidered onto the artwork. These textiles are often saved by families over generations, carrying the imprints of the figures they once clothed.
Purple Hibiscus is part of Unravel: The Power & Politics of Textiles in Art. We continue to support the dialogue around the Unravel exhibition at the Barbican and respect both the artists who have chosen to withdraw their works and those who continue to exhibit.
